What a sad day this is for me.

For some of you, Borders closing is likely not a big deal. Some of you might have a Barnes & Noble nearby or maybe you’ve already switched over to e-books. But for me, Borders is more than just a place to buy books.

Borders has become a place for me to connect with my tween. We go every Wednesday after school to get a cup of coffee (or hot chocolate!), talk, and look at magazines together. When Ella was born, her first public outing was to Borders. It’s where my knitting group meets once a month. And the staff knows the regulars.

For example, earlier this week, a girl behind the coffee counter told me that she had seen my oldest at the mall with her friends and asked how the baby was doing.

Borders has really become something more than just a bookstore for us – and frankly, for many others in our big-but-small community.

But enough with the sentimentality. For those of you looking for a deal, Borders may very well be the place to go. The liquidation sale starts today with savings of up to 40% off. And PLUS members will continue to receive their extra 10% off throughout the liquidation.

Now, this does NOT necessarily mean that you’ll score a stellar deal right now, so keep that in mind. If you were strategic about your Borders coupon use, you may not get things at any less of a discount. But it’s worth keeping an eye on for sure.

It’s never nice to see a business closing, especially one that deals in books and knowledge and information and entertainment …

But I will be in line to see what discounts are to be had. While I do buy ebooks, I also love buying traditional print for the stories I want to read over and over again.

Are the deals better than my amazon used page?

      Henny,

The deals are definitely NOT better than the Amazon used page. At this point in the sale, I would only recommend it for things that you can’t easily find used or that are very expensive new. Outside of that, I would wait several weeks to shop. In addition to the store inventory, remember that Borders also has to clean out its warehouses.

I am very sorry to hear about Borders going out of business. Every time I travel I enjoy the hours I spend in the different locations for entertainment and I love the ambience. I can’t believe it! How sad!!
