The 15% Off Staples Back to School Shopping Pass – A Deal or Not?

This weekend I spied the Staples Back-to-School shopping pass in the Sunday fliers.

Or, at least, I spied the advertisement for it.

At any rate, with all the ads for penny pencils and $1 notebooks, I wondered if this Back-to-School shopping pass was a good deal.

You pay $10 for the pass, which you can use once per day to save 15% on all your school supplies. There are a few exclusions (of course!!) like technology and cases of paper, but for the most part, anything your kid will need for school is included.

With the price tag being $10 and the savings each time being 15%, you’d really need to spend a total of around $65 on school supplies for this deal to be worth it. And whether it’s a good deal or not will be dependent on what your child needs for school. In our school system, we easily spend $65 – and each child is also asked to bring in supplies to share with the other students (budget cuts and all that). So for us, it’s a no-brainer.

But if your child really needs only a pack of crayons, a few glue sticks, and some pencils, I’d say skip it.

Or, if you’re like me and you’re an office supply junkie, get it and use it on all the pretty pens and notebooks you can find!

I love that you mentioned this was only a good deal if you were going to buy a lot of supplies! I really appreciate the honesty. I probably won’t need to get a ton of supplies for my girls but my husband is a teacher and loves to have a lot of supplies. So I am definitely going to look into this. Thanks!!

If you have more than one kid in school, i think it pays out. But I’m not convinced that staples is the cheapest school supply store to begin with. They can charge a neat profit for a little pen.

I have to admit, Staples is my go-to store for school stuff, I can always get what the kids need and always have a good selection to choose from. Unlike bigger warehouse stores like WalMart, etc where the selection can be iffy and picked-over.
